C.O.N.I. on Alpine Skiing

“Last year in November 2008, a BTS SMART-D System has been acquired by the C.O.N.I. Medicine and Sport Science Institute. The System will be integrated with other devices in our institute to be used for the evaluation of different Olympic Disciplines.
The researchers of the Institute have had experience using BTS Optoelectronic Systems in laboratory since the mid 1990’s, but the recent technological development and the possibility of an ‘outdoor’ use of the system under the direct sunlight open a lot of new and very interesting fields of development and applications. Among them there are Athletics, Cycling, Weightlifting, Volleyball, Tennis, Boxing, and many disciplines of the Italian Paralympic Committee and also of Winter Sports.
As an example of this, we want to highlight the fact that for the ‘first time’ we have performed tests on the snow under direct sunlight, simulating trials of Cross-Country and Alpine Skiing, considering also the favourable period at the end of the agonistic season. In this phase we are also proceeding with the training of specialized technicians in the use of the system and defining new protocols necessary to realize the studies in the program.
Movement analysis technology contributes so much to the Biomechanics Science and is a fundamental part in supporting the definition of optimized sport training programs. For this reason we are sure that an active collaboration with BTS and the use of their measurement solutions will move forward and provide interesting new development at the highest level within the Sports Field”.
